Glade View Elementary under investigation for suspicious marks on students’ FCAT answer sheets

BELLE GLADE — Glade View Elementary has received an Incomplete rating for its school grade this year because the school is under investigation by the district because of an unusual pattern of wrong-to-right erasure marks on 33 of its students’ FCAT answer sheets.

The suspicious erasure marks were flagged by a testing security firm hired by the state to scrutinize the FCAT and other standardized tests for signs of cheating.

Belle Glade was one of 21 schools in the state – and the only one in Palm Beach County – flagged for a potential systematic problem with its FCAT results. Last year, the school had a C grade.

There seemed to be more pervasive erasures indicating potential involvement of adults in providing correct answers, Florida interim Education Commissioner John Winn said today about the schools that were flagged for investigation.

Marc Baron, the district’s chief of performance accountability, declined to offer more information on the issue, citing the open investigation.
